THE IRISH CATHOLIC ASSOCIATION

Most people are aware that a significant number of Irish people emigrated to Argentina in the early part of the last century. Many left for this South American land from the midlands and Wexford especially, long before the Great Famine.

On the advice of Fr. Fahy the immigrants moved out from Buenos Aires to the fertile rolling plains of the Pampas. In 1848 a hospital was established in Buenos Aires for the Irish community.

This was followed by the opening of a school for girls in 1856 by the Mercy Sisters from Ireland.
The Irish Catholic Assoication was founded in 1883,by Fr. Dillon and 52 representatives of the irish community. Their one main concern was regarding the education of the daughters of members of the Irish-Argentine Community. Consequently their first undertaking was to build a School, which was called St. Brigid's, invoking the Saint's protection and guidance as an Irish patron and protector of all those striving for knowledge.

As an initial step in celebrating the centenary of St. Brigid's, Ceoltoiri Kilkenny Group was invited to Argentian in August 1998.
