THE IRISH CATHOLIC ASSOCIATIONMost people are aware that a significant number of Irish people emigrated to Argentina in the early part of the last century. Many left for this South American land from the midlands and Wexford especially, long before the Great Famine. On the advice of Fr. Fahy the immigrants moved out from Buenos Aires to the fertile rolling plains of the Pampas. In 1848 a hospital was established in Buenos Aires for the Irish community.
This was followed by the opening of a school for girls in 1856 by the Mercy Sisters from Ireland. As an initial step in celebrating the centenary of St. Brigid's, Ceoltoiri Kilkenny Group was invited to Argentian in August 1998.
