DON'T CRY FOR US ARGENTINA

On 31st July 1998 we left for a 16 day concert tour in Argentina. This trip was history making in that we were the first Irish Traditional Group of this kind ever to perform in South America.

The visit was the result of an invitation by the Irish Catholic Association in Argentina and the vision of its President, Fr. Bertie Flanagan, to bring 'A Flavour of Ireland' to the large community of Irish descendants who left Ireland after the famine to make their home in Argentina. The trip was arranged to co-incide with the centenary of the founding of St. Brigid's College.

A hectic schedule saw the group visit many venues beginning with a reception at the Irish Embassy in Buenos Aires hosted by the Irish Ambassador at the time, Dr. Art Agnew, who gave tremendous moral support during the trip. The first and final concerts in Buenos Aires were at the Monsignor Dillon Theatre. In between the group gave performances in Buenos Aires at 'The Rural', a major agricultural show which runs for 3 weeks, Clarke's Restaurant, St. Brigid's and Monsignor Dillon Schools, St. Patrick's Nursing Home and the famous 'Hurling Club'. We travelled to Lujan, Rosario, San Antonio de Areco and Mercedes, and played to packed theatres everywhere we went.

During a series of dancing workshops the group were surprised and delighted to see 2 ladies dance sean-nós steps taught originally in Argentina by the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland, and to discover that Irish dancing is still taught, and to meet people who can speak fluent Irish. Members of the 'Cross and Shamrock' Celtic Group joined Ceoltóirí Kilkenny for sessions in The Shamrock and Druid Inn. Children in the schools performed Irish songs and Irish dancing.

During our stay sightseeing included a visit to Recolete Cemerery to see the grave of Admiral William Browne from Foxford, Co. Mayo (founder of the Argentine navy) and the tomb of Eva Peron, to the River Plate Stadium, the Basilica at Lujan where in the crypt among statues from all over the world is a shrine to Our Lady of Knock, and a visit to the famous Colon Theatre Opera House.

An excerpt from a supplement prepared by 'The Southern Cross' newspaper sums up the impression created by Ceoltóirí on the Argentine people:

'Things will never be the same here again and as they look back on the impression they created, Ceoltóirí Kilkenny can be justified in sharing the sentiments expressed by the poet in the following lines :

"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time"
